Home Series: Painting Our Window Trim

Hi guys! I get this question SO much so I’m excited to finally have all the details in one place! We get asked on the daily if we replaced the windows in our new house, but we did not!! We just painted them black! They were an off white before, so we either needed to paint them white to match the walls, or black because it’s awesome. Some of our windows are vinyl and some of our windows are wood, we used the same process for both. Our house is obviously a work in progress so a lot of what you see outdoors and some indoors is still incomplete, but we’re getting there!

We used Home Hardware’s Beauti-Tone Exterior paint in Black Cat. We used it for our stairs inside, and also our front door. It’s our go-to for all things black. You can see the post on our stairs here!

I like to use artist paint brushes for painting things like window trim because there is a lot of cutting and intricate edges. They don’t need to be anything special, you can find good, inexpensive ones here.. I find it so much harder using a big bulky brush you’d get at a hardware store. I also don’t like to use painters tape. I find it doesn’t make things easier in most cases. A lot of the time the paint leaks underneath it, and a lot of the time when you peel it off at the end, it takes paint with it and you just end up needing to touch it up anyways. This way, it might take a little longer and more tedious, but for me it’s worth it.

For our windows, they needed 2 coats, and then a bit of touch up. Make sure you are getting into all the creases but to smooth over any drips or where the paint is thicker. Be sure to open your windows while drying so they don’t get stuck shut.

A lot of the articles and videos we seen complicated things a bit for painting your window trim, so we were hesitant to do it at first. We talked with Justine at our Grand Bay Home Hardware and she advised us on this process, and it’s worked for us! Both indoor and outdoor. We haven’t noticed any fading or chips, but it’s only been a few months.

Let me know if you have any questions and make sure to watch the video here on exactly how I do it! Make sure to tag me in any photos if you try it!
