Black & White in Sloane & Tate

I cannot believe we're mid way through June. Wheennnnn did this happen? I think I know why it's so confusing though, -because it's still freezing out. Although the weather is a bit of a downer, it's nice to keep my comfy clothes out for a little while longer. I'm not one who loves shorts, so if we can keep those packed away for a little longer, I'm happy!

I've recently been introduced to this menswear inspired brand, Sloane & Tate. Their ethereal fabrics are custom made in LA. I'm wearing their shirt and it's the softest shirt I own. It's so comfortable and it feels luxurious. I love clothing like this -I love being comfortable, minimal (AKA black and white) and somewhat dressed like a boy. This brand gets me.

Art Battle 390

A little while ago I participated in my 3rd Art Battle. Art Battle is a live painting competition founded in Canada. It was founded by two young guys that had a great idea and made it a reality. Art Battle started 7 years ago and is now holding competitions not only in Canada, but worldwide. It consists of 12 artists total. Each artist is provided with one canvas, acrylic paint and twenty minutes. The artists bring their own tools and brushes. No reference photos or materials are allowed. Once the countdown begins, the pressure is on. You then have only 20 minutes to create something awesome. When the time is up, the audience votes for their favorite. Only 4 move on to the final round. The 4 winners then face off in another round of 20 minutes. The crowd votes again and then there is one winner that moves along to regionals, then provincials, etc.

After the battles, the art works are auctioned off. Each artist gets 50% of what their painting sells for. The other half goes towards growing Art Battle! This past time I couldn't even help myself and bought one of the paintings of my competitors, Nat Perry! It was soo gorgeous and I knew I couldn't leave the building without it. This one was in Fredericton at the Charlotte Street Centre, one of my favorite spots in Freddy beach!

It's such a fun idea and I am thrilled to get invited back each time. All three times I have made it to the finalist round but haven't been able to pull through yet ;) Lucky for me, I have been invited to battle in regionals next Saturday. I will be competing as an all-star and it will be held in Saint John! Come out and see it live. It's such a fun event and so exciting. -Also, there's liquor! It's such a great idea and awesome to have here in New Brunswick, so come out and support your local artists!! We need you!!

See the official invite here

See you June 11th!!!

Weekend Whites

I hope everyone had a great weekend. It's Sunday night and from what I know, there are two types of people. The ones that feel like they accomplished a lot this weekend, and ones that wasted the whole thing. Mine was productive! I worked a lot on AKA stuff, and got to read a book for the first time in months! If you missed our AKA recap, check out my latest post here.

I spent my weekend in this Morris Day the Label dress. It's lovely and light. I plan on living in white this summer, and if you do too, you need this. It's the kind of length that is good for the daytime or night, it's a conservative in the length but makes up for it with an open back. I didn't wear a bra with it, and it looked really cute. Mines a size 6 in Australian sizes, equivalent to a size small in Canadian sizes.

AKA DECOR X TUCK STUDIO

As some of you may have seen, we have officially launched AKA DECOR in stores! This past week has been a crazy one and so many things have happened that we never imagined happening so soon.

I'll start by telling you a little bit about our newborn, AKA DECOR.

I've been interested and intrigued by interior decorating for a long time and have slowly been wanting to dip my toes into it for myself. I got the idea of cushions last summer. I thought, someone needs to be making cushions. They are so marketable, so cool, and you can put ANYTHING on them.  I was venting to everyone about how someone  needs to make this happen, ...but it can't really be me. (que 5000 other things going on) .... so, in comes Katie. She was on maternity leave and really open and also intrigued by this new idea. We brainstormed possibilities and logistics, by the end of the night our brand was forming.

AKA stands for Art known as. This is where we incorporate our love for all things art, photography, poetry and design into our product. All of our designs are made from original artwork. -This is most of the fun. All of our materials are from north america and the cushions themselves are handmade by Katie.

The startup life is less then glamorous, but we can't say that it's not rewarding. We are part of an entrepreneurial program by Enterprise Saint John, called Venture Garage. They have all the resources for startups and eager people willing to give us a hand. Many late nights are spent at Connexionworks and googling suppliers, inspiration and budgeting. Ups and downs, breakdowns and highs. But as they say, hard work pays off. We are now wholesaling to two stores in Saint John. What?
In less then a year our brand has been in the works, and lucky for us there are some amazing people out there willing to give us a shot.

Judith Mackin, the creator of Tuck Studio, has been mentoring us for a while now. We can't thank her enough for believing in our vision and helping us bring it to life and to the shelves of her store.

These very waters is an exclusive line to Tuck. It is a collaboration of my photography, combined with poetry by New Brunswick poet, Charles G. D. Roberts and handmade by Katie.

One of the coolest things about AKA is that we can really put meaning into our lines. These very waters hits close to home. The poetry is New Brunswick based and the lines were carefully chosen by Katie and I and matched with our favorite beaches in the city.

Artist Statement:
Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. Port City. Renaissance City. Harbour City. There are many ways that our city is identified, both by natives and by visitors. Personally, when we think Saint John, we think beaches. We think of crashing waves and driftwood, expansive views, sparkling sea, and steep embankments overlooking rugged coastline. Remarkable beaches are very much part of the unique, dynamic nature of Saint John.
We present our view of these beaches in counterpoint to poetry written by 19th century New Brunswick poet Charles G D Roberts.

On Thursday, we had our first ever opening at Tuck. Is is seriously  the most gorgeous furniture & decor store in the city. It looks like its straight out of New York City. The products are clean, detailed and perfect. I cannot believe we are selling here.

We had an amazing turnout and we are still are in awe. Thank you to everyone who came out to support this new brand, we really really appreciate it.

Now. ft. Christian Paul Watches

I recently got a tattoo on my arm that I've had in my mind for a while. It says, "now." It means a couple things. It's the urgency that I have to get things done, and to actually DO the things that I sometimes only talk about doing. The other meaning is one I didn't know it would have, until it was embedded into my skin. It really makes me slow down as much as speed up. As I'm speed walking to work because I'm running late, I see it. I see it and I slow down. It's now. I'm here, now. Walking through the city on a gorgeous day or stuck in traffic and hungry. I'm reminded to take it all in. Now is just as important as getting all the other shit done too. Time is hitting me a lot harder than it did before and reminding me to take a breather once and a while and stop and smell the flowers.

These gorgeous time pieces are by Christian Paul watches. Christian Paul is an Australian designer and I am still going crazy over how beautiful these watches are. Mine is the Whitehaven Metal Mesh, 43mm White Marble. It is so perfect for the summer, I can't imagine a more perfect watch. My palette this summer is a lot of whites and nudes and it fits in flawlessly. Callum's is the Strand Marble 43mm. His is black marble with a black strap. It's so cool. I won't even lie, I wear it all the time. The black on black is something I really like. The subtle marble design in both watches is something you don't catch right away but when you look in more detail it's a nice little surprise. If you know me, I love everything marble, so clearly these are a winner for me.

Lounge Underwear

In the past year or so it has been in style to wear bras that aren't always hidden. Things like bralettes and Calvin Klein sports bras are almost worn alone like comfy t-shirts.

I recently found Lounge Underwear online. They make the kind of underwear that's cute when it shows. Worn with baggy vnecks or tanks with bigger armholes or slouchy ts, it's OK if your undies show, they're meant to!

Lounge has a few styles to pick from, and honestly you can't go wrong with any of them. They have a very simplistic, minimal, monochromatic style that I really love. I went with the white with the black band, because I plan on living in them this summer and want them to go with every outfit I own. The straps are adjustable and the band is thick and supportive, and they are really, really comfortable.

I styled mine with a large armholed t-shirt from Forever 21, my grey Mavi jeans and little nike summer sandals.

My top 5 blogs

Okay, this isn't easy. And I still feel uncertain about my choices, but my decisions have been made. Here are my top five most visited blogs. They range from art, fashion, poetry & beauty. I would assume most people frequently visit the same type of blog, but I have a wide range of interests, so I kept it honest!

1. Barefoot Blonde

My top visited blog is Amber Fillerup's, Barefoot Blonde. I met Amber in New York and was a fan of her for years. Meeting her at fashion week made me an even bigger fan because she was SO sweet. Her baby Atticus was also with her. Anyways, I found Amber Fillerup originally on YouTube because of her hair tutorials (she does killer braids). Through her blog I've watched her get engaged, married and have two kids! (stalker status) But really, her story is sweet and her pictures are gorgeous. A lot of her posts are paid or sponsored, but she still manages to keep a lot of real talk in there too. She makes having babies look easy!!!

2. FIGTNY

This is a minimalist fashion blog. Honestly, she is so minimalist that I don't even know her name. There isn't a voice to her blog, strictly facts. Which works in this case, as I am only interested really in the pieces she's wearing. Her photography is killer and her outfits are soooo good. It's a perfect blog to check when you're getting ready in the morning wondering if you really can wear converse with a dress. (you can!)

3. Andrew Wilson

I love love love being on Andrew Wilson's blog. It's one of my sources of inspiration and has been for years. The mixture of the raw life he's living in New York, to the smoking and poetry. It just gets me. It's so relaxing to scroll through and his words are really relatable. It's also cool to see someone grow over years through their words & photography. Check this one out and I guarantee you'll get lost in it and wish you were wandering the streets at night in NY.

4. We and the color

WATC is an art blog. It really covers all my bases in one place. It has all the latest news in photography, art, fashion, design.. everything. I love that it is always so up to date. It's a great place to explore when you're looking to kill time or gain some quick inspiration or catch up on a story you've been meaning to read. -Like Taylor Swifts new Vogue cover, you're welcome.

5. She's in the glow

She's in the glow is a beauty blog. Personally, I find it hard to keep up with beauty blogs/trends. I always find there's a way cheaper facial cream that can do the same thing! Anyways, I'm still a sucker for them. I've been following this one for a few years. Annie Atkins shows you all the new products and reviews them, as well as cleanses & makeup tricks. It's a cute blog, and good for a light read, but I wouldn't go out and buy every product. But if you're looking for something specific, check here!

I visit a lot of other blogs that deserve an honorable mention. See below!
