Happy Sunday guys!! I finally have a home project to share with you!! It’s been really tough trying to create complete posts for these home renos because we are working on a hundred things at once and not finishing any completely LOL. But!! We have just finished the staircase!
This house was filled with all kinds of what I call, orange wood. Lol. If you know me, you know I hate this color more than anything. We painted over ALL of it and everything is much easier on the eyes now lol. The stairs we knew had to go. As soon as I started to think creatively about what they could be I had a vision in my head. It turned out exactly as planned, except for, I originally didn’t plan for a wood railing and posts. I had black in my initial thoughts. But as I kept thinking about it, I liked the idea of bringing back some of those wood elements, but in an updated way.
For the stairs themselves, we used exterior paint from the Grand Bay Home Hardware, we used Beauti-Tone’s Black Cat. We chose exterior paint because it is more durable for a high traffic area. I really like Black Cat because it doesn’t have any green or blueish undertones, it is just black. We sanded them over and eliminated all the scuffs and dents. They were in pretty rough shape to start, but this gave us a smooth surface to work with and the paint went on much better. Normally Justin uses all the power tools, but this is one that I wanted to try, and it’s actually pretty easy! And satisfying.
For the railing, we made it completely custom. We used spindles and connectors ordered in from the Grand Bay Home Hardware and we cut the spindles to fit. For the bannister and the end posts we used an oak wood from Kent Building Supplies and cut them all to fit!
The stair runner I found on Amazon! I had a specific vision for that and luckily I found exactly what I wanted after doing a bit of research!! And the price isn’t bad either! I was expecting to pay a lot more for a 19 foot rug. Lol. I wasn’t sure how long I needed, or what was an average stair length, so to measure the stairs, I used green tape along all of the stairs, and then measured the tape! The link I will attach below has a few color options too! I didn’t choose the black and gold, I would have chosen the red! We used red rugs a lot in the old condo, so I wanted to change it up a little bit this time. The runner comes in a 25 foot length, and we cut it to fit! The quality of the rug is really great, its thick and soft, and is PERFECT for this. The shipping was pretty quick too. I am pretty happy with the whole transaction. To install the stair runner, there are a few things you can do, but I like the idea of stapling them in place the best. You can’t see the staples, and it’s not going to slip.
Overall I am so happy with the vision that came to life!! I love black stairs, we painted them in our old place too. I think it adds a cool factor that stairs don’t normally carry. I was set on a runner because of the look and because it makes them feel a lot more cozy on your feet. I definitely want to see if any of you guys try this out!! Make sure to send me photos or tag me on Instagram! I think I’ve covered all the details, but if I forgot anything or if you have anymore questions, I will answer them all in the comment box below!!
xx
