Duality

So this is a little delayed, but my school had a gallery opening on April 11th, for my class! The theme was Duality and it was a pretty fun event. My class had such great work up in the walls of the gallery, when it was all put together we were all pretty excited to show it off. It's so different seeing your work printed in 24"x 36" up on a wall, rather then digitally on a small computer screen. I loved it. I hope to have work in more gallery shows to come!!!

Thanks to Janna Boucher for letting me blow up here gorgeous face to show off to the world!!
Thanks to everyone who came out to support!!

Talking to who will listen

A lot of people told me in the past couple weeks that I don't blog enough. I would!! I just don't think I have enough to say/show for a blog post but apparently I'm wrong! Lol some of you don't care and want me to talk about anything, so if you guys are ok with that then I am too. It might be a whole lot of nothing but you're asking for it.

Some of my classmates and I agreed that during the summer we would take on a self portrait series challenge. To challenge us to be creative and challenge us to shoot during the "off season" shooting yourself is one of the hardest things in my opinion. So stay tuned throughout the summer for a few of those shots, should be interesting.

Also I've been thinking a lot lately about how much people change when they are growing older. It's weird, I can see maturity. It freaks me out because it means I'm not considered a kid anymore. Some of the people I grew up with and were close to have changed so much and became so mature and focused, as well as some others that are still stuck in a high school mentality. I'm not saying its wrong or right just a personal observation. I can see when I look at myself and choices that I've made in the past 2 years that it scares me how much things don't scare me. Does that make sense. I think too many people make excuses for why they can't become who they want to be, the lifestyle they live, money situations, education, where they come from. I think it's all bull. Or they don't genuinely want the lifestyle that they think they want or they would stop making excuses and make it happen. yolo

Okkkkkkkk anyways. What has caused me to write a whole lot of nothing is Martello Tower. A beautiful tower built for the war of 1812 as sort of a lookout for the harbour against the attackers. Still stands today on the lower west side. I spent my childhood growing up on the west side with my whole family within a few blocks of each other. My elementary school, middle school, community centre, grandmothers house, beach, friends house, everything within 2km. So Martello tower to me was a place we would go sliding on snow days and just something we passed by on the way to school, every, single, day. Come high school we moved across the west side to Greendale, for those of you who are familiar with Saint John, you get all this. So I would not surpass this tower as often. Then after graduating and after 2 years of college, I come to visit my grandmother and literally have to pull over when passing by this tower. It is BEAUTIFUL and so inspiring to me to take photographs. I love it. And I know because I personally did this, people in the area do not appreciate how gorgeous this thing is. I have been travelling so much lately and when I come back home I have a whole new perspective on how cool and unusual stuff that we see every day is, to other people.

SO. Another project series I will be taking on within the next little while is featuring Saint John gems in fashion shoots throughout the city. I want to put them into perspective, and I want to show people how cool this city is, with my own twist. So with using Martello Tower, the pulp and paper mill, the refinery and anything else I can think of I'm going to make some art. If you know of anything that you think would make a cool unusual place for photos, leave a comment. I am open to all suggestions because I think this is going to be awesome. Who knows maybe it will be published in some crazy magazine someday, so give input now!

So there you go. If you want more posts like this then keep checking back because I have so many thoughts and I'll tell whoever will listen;)
Xxx

These photos were taken yesterday in downtown Boston

Boston strong

Our long time planned trip to Boston is a success ! After all the craziness we weren't sure if we were going to make it. We are happy to be here and ready for some hockey!!! Here are a few drive by shots from today in downtown Boston

Blogging from the iPad

iPads are amazing. Blogger has an app?! I don't even need a computer anymore, if only it had Photoshop... And a socket for an external hard drive..

This photo was taken of little kid today, also with the iPad

The infamous boxing shoot

This is my last week of classes and I CAN'T WAIT FOR SUMMER. This shoot was for a 7 week project for school, I decided to take on incooporating sports with fashion. I'll admit it was a challenge for me, but I am super happy with all my results. This was the first shoot and I will be posting the 2 other shoots that were for this assignment as well so keep checking back.

Big thanks to Terry Blizzard, the owner of Afterburn Performance Center, Body by Blizz for letting us use his gym as a location! Go LIKE his page  Kendal Blizzard for doing her amazing hair and makeup job AS ALWAYS. So talented. And for her brother Zack for putting up with us begging him to model! Hahaha and for Jordyn & Loren for helping me out too! Such a fun day.

Keep talking

I'll keep this short. I have been researching artists and artistic creators more then ever lately for school work as well as on my own time while I should be doing school work.

All successful people/artists are controversial. And I think that's what makes them important. If you can cause an argument, debate or conflict by creating YOUR OWN art. Then you are doing something right. I can see from reading that a lot of successful young artists were a little bit discouraged at the beginning of their careers for bad reviews, and their work creating controversy. If you can make people talk from work you are creating from within and from being inspired, you are on the right track. It means it's catching attention, and that's the first step. It is so weird reading about experiences from others that started out where I am right now. You are never going to please everyone, and that is something I am dealing with right now, and I am slowly coming to a peace with that because it will only hold you back trying to make everyone happy with something that you are doing solely for yourself. Maybe I'm wrong? I hope I cause some controversy

Here's a link to one of the recent articles I read. The one that made me "click"

All the people that have negative things to say, keep talking because you're making us all successful.

Controversy is key ;)

Here's a few shots from a sports editorial 7 week project I have for school. I can't wait to share the whole series soon!!

A giant blog post

Hi guys! Thanks for checking this out, for anyone that knows me at all, knows that my life lately has been absolutely NUTS! And anyone who knows me at all would also know I wouldn't want it any other way. I shot so much over the past couple weeks so I am going to try and keep it as organized as possible when posting and explaining the shoots. I visited Florida again for my March break and just tried to take full advantage of all the opportunities that were in front of me for shooting, networking, meeting people just doing everything I can to learn more, so I thought I'd share some with you guys. If you feel like stalking me  a little bit more I update my Instagram everyday with photos and thoughts and shoots and all sorts of stuff I don't really put anywhere else, its super easy and a quick way to get feedback, so check it out @alliebeckwith

Enough of me going on, I am going to start with a shoot I did with my new friend Emelie! She is from Sweeden and such a doll, she is a girlfriend of one of the guys who plays on my boyfriend's hockey team. But she could totally pass as a professional model;) We headed down to South Beach in Miami and had a ball.

****** Also! I will be travelling to Saint John this coming weekend, I have shoots booked for Friday morning and Saturday afternoon, but other than that I am open! Special $100 deal going on right now for portrait sessions! Send me an email to book! allie.beckwith@gmail.com *******

When I was down there I got invited on a shoot with a Commercial/Fashion based photographer named Sonny Sesner (there's a link to his site!) The shoot was for Men's dress shirts for  Don Bas Collection, the setting was at Epic Hotels in Miami, it was so absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous. There I met Sonny, the designer of Don Bas and Sonny's intern Cynthia. Was so awesome meeting up with them and watching a professional model work, it was so refreshing and was so nice of them to have me along helping out.

My last shoot was this past Sunday shooting the Florida Panthers vs. the Montreal Canadians. It was super fun, I met the Official Photographer of the Panthers Eliot Schechter (Link to his site) and all the Florida media people he works with! I can't believe how nice everyone I met was and how willing everyone is to help me succeed. It was a really good feeling.

So keep in mind I'm no sports photographer;) but here's a couple shots from my hole through the glass!

Blue & Reds

Lighting assignment using the ring light. Such a heavy contraption but I love the results, kind of a snapshot, direct flash feel also color backgrounds that's something I don't usually do.

I'm looking forward to doing lots and lots of shooting while I am in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area for the March break, I hope everything works out and I'll have lots to share!
